United Methodist Dollars for Scholars Scholarship

Did You Know…

If you or someone you know has been a Georgia Methodist for over a year and plan to attend a Methodist college, university or seminary full-time, then you are eligible to apply for the UM Dollars for Scholars (UMDFS) Scholarship!

The UMDFS program involves matching support from a student’s church, United Methodist Higher Education Foundation (UMHEF), participating United Methodist-related schools, and participating UMC conference foundations. Awards range from $2,000 – $4,000 per student for each year in attendance.

The Georgia United Methodist Foundation’s Scholarship Ministry empowers the next generation of spiritual leaders. Since 2011, they have awarded 790 scholarships totaling $663,700 to Georgia students attending United Methodist colleges, universities, and seminaries. You may recall that upon Rev. Dan Brown’s retirement, Dunwoody UMC funded a scholarship in his and Carol’s honor called the Dan and Carol Brown Scholarship Endowment. This scholarship will give preference for students attending LaGrange College.

Our very own Asti White, Dunwoody UMC Candler Intern, knows first-hand how incredibly helpful this program has been in both his undergraduate and graduate experiences. He is currently working towards a Masters of Divinity at Candler School of Theology and a Masters in Development Practice at Laney Graduate School. Asti notes that what makes this scholarship unique is how “the multi-layered funding body unites to help so many students. It is truly a testament of our faith community coming together.” Celebrating in the abundance of the local church, the UMC agencies and foundations match the amount that the local church lifts up for the student.

With the rising cost of education, most institutions are increasing tuition costs each year. “I thank all who tithe and give for the apportionments,” says Asti, “because the apportionment dollars really do go a long way in both our local church setting and across seas.” He was able to see this first-hand while traveling with his alma mater, LaGrange College (a United Methodist College), to other Methodist ministries in El Salvador and the Philippines.

The application deadline for the 2021-2022 academic year is March 1, 2021. Learn more and apply today at: https://www.umhef.org/apply/.
