"DUMC has played such an important part in the life of our family, not only through the growth and development in our relationships with Christ, but also the strong sense of community and fellowship with our congregation. We are blessed to be a part of a church family to puts such an emphasis on service as well. We believe the legacy we are leaving through our will at DUMC will continue to ensure this same sense of faith, fellowship and service for future generations." - Chris and Samantha Faklaris
Legacy Giving
Legacy Giving
gifts to its endowment to support the ministries of the church in perpetuity, as only the endowment’s income is distributed for use.
What does the endowment fund support?
Undesignated endowment gifts provide the church with the greatest level of flexibility to meet ministry needs today and in the future. There are five broad areas that the church has identified as priorities for designated giving.
Spiritual Formation
Seeking Christ through worship and study
Targeted Ministries
Showing love to our community through every age, stage, and interest
Local and Global Missions
Serving big in our community and across the globe
Leadership Development
Sharing more of what has been entrusted to us
Church Campus
Keeping our doors open to welcome our mission field
What are the ways to give to the endowment?
Gifts of cash, stock, bonds, IRA/401(k) distributions, real estate, and insurance with cash value can be given to the church during your lifetime. If IRA/401(k) Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs) are directly given to the church, those payments are not included in your current income, reducing your income tax liability.
You may prefer to make a gift to DUMC’s endowment through an estate gift. This is done by including the church in your will as a designated beneficiary. It can also be done through life insurance death benefits, charitable trusts and gift annuities (gifts that provide current income, as well as a tax deduction), retirement plan (IRA/401(k)) assets, and life residence of your house. Certain assets can be particularly beneficial because, unlike an heir who would be taxed at regular income tax rates, the church is not subject to tax. Roger Young, Chief Operating Officer, can assist you with the specifics of the transfer of assets to the church.

In addition to the joy and gratification in providing for the church, some planned gifts (annuities and charitable remainder trusts) can also bring benefits immediately by reducing your taxes, increasing current income and your effective rate of return on assets. We encourage you to explore the possibilities and opportunities for creative gift planning with your legal and tax advisors. They can help create a plan that suits your personal circumstances and aligns your philanthropic giving with your financial needs and tax planning.
The investments are professionally managed through the Georgia United Methodist Foundation in Peachtree Corners, Georgia (www.gumf.org). The Foundation also provides confidential consulting services at no charge to donors who are contemplating a planned gift to our church. Georgia United Methodist Foundation 770-449-6726 www.gumf.org
The DUMC Endowment Committee administers these funds on an ongoing basis, and distributions are made based on church endowment policies with the approval of church leadership. A financial report is presented to the Charge Conference each year.
The DUMC Legacy Society recognizes those who have made a gift to the endowment during their lifetime and/or made provision for the church in their estate. We know that this group will be an inspiration for others to follow, and we hope that you will join this effort. Each year, we will have a gathering of the DUMC Legacy Society to report on our endowment and to share how we have used the proceeds. In addition, we will host a Legacy Sunday which will include a listing of your name in the bulletin. However, this would only be done with your prior approval. The committee respects the wishes of any donor who prefers to remain anonymous.
“We have witnessed many miracles as our Church has strengthened the spirits, souls, and bodies of so many people in the community. By naming DUMC as a beneficiary of our IRAs and will, we are supporting its efforts to bring hope, peace, joy, and love to many more people in the future.”
