Dunwoody United Methodist Church's Great Day of Service is a family-friendly event that organizes 700 volunteers in 29 different service projects -- both onsite at Dunwoody UMC and within the surrounding community.

There is a place for YOU at Great Day of Service! Together, we have the opportunity to truly make a difference. Check the list below for a full range of projects get involved in.

Overview


Register as an entire family and spend the morning serving the community! Read the project descriptions below and click to register at the bottom of the page. If you are interested in being a project coordinator, please contact Chris Mixer at chris.mixer@dunwoodyumc.org.

Donations Needed! We always need a variety of donations for our projects. Please bring these items to the donation bins (outside the nursery, near the soda machine) prior to Great Day of Service. Click HERE for a PDF of needed items. Thank you for your consideration and generosity!

Projects


On-Site Projects (At Dunwoody UMC)

Rise Against Hunger
Similar to Foodstock. This is our “meal-packing event”
Two Packing Shifts (Age 4+):
• 9:00-11:00
• 11:30-1:30
Two Support Shifts (Age 16+):
• 8:00-11:00, Set-Up & Grain Management
• 11:30-2:30, Grain-Management & Break-Down

Potato Drop (All ages) -
Bagging potatoes for the Atlanta Community Food Bank. Great for Preschool families!

UMCOR Hurricane Relief Kits (All ages) -
Creating hygiene & cleaning kits for communities surviving natural disasters

Blankets for Project Linus (Age 10+) -
Make no-sew fleece blankets for sick or needy children

Dresses for Zambia (Age 8+) -
Sew pillowcases into dresses for orphans. Must know how to sew and bring sewing machine.

Knit In (All ages) -
Make squares for NICU babies at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. Must know how to knit.

Sole Hope (Age 8+) –
Upcycling old denim jeans into wearable shoes for Uganda. No special sewing or cobbler skills required, but cutting with scissors.

Action Ministries’ Smart Kid Program (Age 12+) -
Hosting a “fun day” for kids. Play, make crafts, and entertain guests.

Breakfast Crew (Age 16+) -
Cooking, serving, & cleanup in Fellowship Hall. Arrive at 6:00 a.m.

Registration Table (Age 18+) -
Greet volunteers & point out room locations. 7:00-9:00 a.m.

Clean Up (Age 16+) -
Move tables, chairs, & reset church for worship on Sunday. 1:00-3:30 p.m.

• Brush With Kindness (Habitat for Humanity) may extend past 1:00 p.m.

Sorting/Cleaning Donated Items (Age 12+)

• Foster Care Support Foundation
• MedShare (this project is from 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.)

Food Box Packing (Age 9+)
• Action Ministries (Feed the Hungry/Package of Hope)
