There are times in life when we do certain things to make a statement. We want to make what we believe clear to others. When Jimmy Carter was inaugurated as our President in 1977, he shocked the nation by skipping the limo ride and walking down Pennsylvania Avenue. He was making a statement of who he was and who he wanted to be. You may remember that he had demonstrated the same thing by carrying his own luggage during the campaign. This coming Sunday is a remembrance of a far more important statement. Jesus chose to enter Jerusalem on the back of a donkey. He came not as a warrior-king, as most expected, on a war-horse but rather as one of peace on the back of a donkey. He was making a statement of what he was and what he wanted to be.
In our lives we need to act in such ways that our faith is seen by the way we live.
We need to act in intentional ways that declare to those around us our core beliefs. If we believe in caring for others, let us demonstrate in acts of care. If we believe that it is important to be forgiven, let us show our forgiveness to those who hurt us. If we believe there should be peace on earth, let us act in ways that help bring that peace. Our creed should come alive in deeds, thus “making a statement” about what we believe.
Jesus could have slipped in Jerusalem and been safe a while longer, but he chose to make a statement. We must have the courage to demonstrate our faith by the way we live.
May God bless you and yours,
