Charge Conference Meeting

Subject: Report on Monday Charge Conference Meeting

May 16, 2017

Dear Dunwoody UMC Member,

I wanted to update you on the outcome of last night's Charge Conference and Church Council meetings, where we considered and voted on two important initiatives.

Building Committee
The Building Committee made the following motion, which was approved by the Charge Conference:

We, the Building Committee, move that Dunwoody United Methodist Church proceed forward with preliminary drawings for a sanctuary renovation and that the Charge Conference authorize a $5.6 million Capital Campaign to be conducted in 2017 to underwrite the Worship Enhancement Program and Capital Asset funding. We further ask that Charge Conference authorize the use of our line of credit, up to the amount of $300,000 to do the initial work of the drawings and conduct the Capital Campaign.

This allows us to move forward with continued development of a sanctuary renovation plan and enables the Capital Campaign Committee to begin a fundraising campaign.

The number one priority of our Five Year Strategic Plan involved worship enhancement. Worship enhancement is at the heart of the sanctuary renovation. It includes moving the choir to the front of the sanctuary, installing a new organ, upgrading the heating and air conditioning system and modifying the sound, video and lighting systems with the goal of the sanctuary supporting multiple forms of worship (ie: Contemporary and Traditional).

Worship Service Times Task Force
The Worship Service Times Task Force made the following motion, which was approved by the Church Council:

The Worship Service Times Task Force moves that the Church Council adopt the following schedule for our Sunday Morning Worship Services and Sunday School beginning Sunday, August 6, 2017:

8:45 am – Contemporary Worship
8:45 am – Chapel Service
9:55 am – Sunday School
11:05 am – Traditional Worship

This change supports the Worship Enhancement Program by allowing clergy to be engaged with Sunday School classes and giving families an opportunity to worship together. We are working through final details and will share more information in June and July.

Thank you to the members of the Building Committee, chaired by Bob Preston who has generously given his time to develop a sanctuary renovation plan, and to the Worship Service Times Task Force members who spent the past year studying both the impact and benefits of these changes.

Our future is built around the needs of our membership and reaching our common vision of being a dynamic Christian community of fully devoted followers of Jesus Christ. Thank you for being a part of that vision.

Your Pastor,
