2012 Great Day of Service Results

OFF-SITE

  • Atlanta Day Shelter: Sorted and hung clothing donations in the clothing closet. Prepared toiletry bags for Christmas gifts for homeless teens.
  • Atlanta Tool Bank: Sanded and painted tools used by multiple non-profit agencies in their mission work.
  • Breakthru House: Painted the art room and landscaped and mowed the yard.
  • Brook Run Park - City of Dunwoody: Cleared a large area of underbrush near the front entrance to the park, assisting the Dunwoody PD in keeping the area safe.
  • Community Assistance Center: Followed up with clients that had recently received emergency financial assistance, aided in coordination of holiday program participants and assisted in operating the Thrift Boutique.
  • Covenant House: Painted rooms of a transitional house for homeless youth.
  • Dunwoody Nature Center: Served as hosts for Tree Hug Festival - helped children with climbing gear.
  • Dunwoody High School: Spread mulch around the outside lunch/picnic area, planted flowers and pulled weeds.
  • Edgewood: Installed a security camera and replaced ceiling tiles.
  • Foster Care Support: Sorted donations, stocked school supplies, cleaned donations, and did childcare.
  • Furkids: Fed, cleaned, and socialized cats at this animal shelter.
  • Global Health Action: Landscaped the grounds of this agency. Pulled weeds, trimmed hedges, and raked leaves.
  • Interfaith Outreach Home: Organized the pantry, mowed the lawn, and trimmed bushes.
  • Jerusalem House: Planted annual bedding plants, to include some leafy vegetables, mulched, trimmed hedges and ivy and general yard clean-up.
  • Lifeline: Animal Project Cleaned cat room, cat litter, and walked dogs.
  • Med Share: Sorted donated medical supplies and checked expiration dates.
  • Project Open Hand: Prepared and packaged meals for people battling chronic illness.
  • Sr. Citizen Services - Meals on Wheels: Delivered four routes of meals to seniors in Atlanta.
  • United Methodist Children's Home: Trimmed shrubs at eight houses and the chapel. Raked leaves and removed debris.
  • Visiting Seniors: Visited five homebound members of our congregation.
  • WCC(Project Extend): 1 Replaced doors, window panes, a stove vent, and repaired a leak under kitchen sink. Also worked on light fixtures and painted.
  • WCC (Project Extend): 2 Painted and restored a shed at a needy senior's home.
  • WCC:  Wheelchair Ramp Installed a wheelchair ramp for a disabled senior.
  • Wesley Foundation at GA Tech: Landscaped the front and back of the building.

 

ON-SITE

  • Cards, letters, and gifts: Wrote cards for soldiers and made gifts for elderly and hospitalized patients.
  • Grady Blankets: Made 60 flannel receiving blankets.
  • Knit In: Knit eight Love Squares for NICU babies at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta.
  • Dresses for Zambia: Made 42 dresses for orphans in Zambia.
  • Project Linus: Made 39 fleece blankets for children facing trauma, serious illness, or otherwise in need.
  • Wellspring Living Craft Project: Made 12 scarfs, decorated 10 picture frames, and made numerous book marks to be sold benefiting this agency that restores victims of human trafficking.
  • Breakfast: Cook, Serve, and Cleanup Served breakfast to over 500 of our volunteers before the Great Day of Service.
  • Lunch at the Pumpkin Patch: Served lunch to 200 people to benefit youth missions.
  • Cooking: Made 12 chicken casseroles for families served by MUST Ministries.
  • Sandwich Making: Made and delivered over 400 sandwiches for the Community in Atlanta.
  • Dividing Grains: Packaged over 800 pounds of beans, rice, and macaroni for CAC clients.
  • Hospitality and Birthday Kits: Assembled 40 birthday party kits for low income families and delivered refreshments to on-site volunteers working at church.
  • Child Comfort Kits: Decorated 200 bags and stuffed them with stuffed animals, toys, and books for children in crisis.
  • Diaper Bags: 75 diaper bags filled for expectant mothers at St. Joseph's Mercy Care Center.
  • HygieneKits for Veterans: Assembled 120 hygiene kits for homeless veterans.
  • Jewelry Collection: Sorted and boxed 250 donated jewelry items for Christmas presents at the Atlanta Day Shelter for Women and Children.
  • Action Ministries: Entertained 14 homeless youth in our church youth area. Played games, did crafts, and served lunch to these guests.
  • Pumpkin Patch: Unloaded two large trucks of pumpkins to benefit youth missions.
  • Potato Drop: Bagged 20,000 pounds of sweet potatoes for the Atlanta Community Food Bank.
  • Stop Hunger Now: Prepared and boxed 40,500 meals for hungry people throughout the world.
